How to Make a Baby Memory Blanket

Making a baby clothes quilt is such a wonderful way of preserving those cute baby clothes that were a gift from special friends or family members or even something really special you bought for your new baby. Most of these clothes haven't really been worn out as they are used for such a short time. Put some thought into it ahead of time by taking some pictures of your baby in some of the outfits you will be using in the baby clothes quilt and using the pictures to incorporate into the quilt or on the label that you might want to attach to this keepsake.

Planning Your Baby Memory Blanket

Clothes to use: Start with clean items. Besides the baby clothes you can use bibs, caps, socks, Halloween costumes, blankets, linens, special curtains and nursery items.

Quilt Sizes: Decide how large of a baby clothes quilt you would like. It can be as small or large as you would like.

28"x 28" quilt will take about 20 articles of clothing 36"x 36" quilt will take about 30 articles of clothing 50"x 60" quilt will take about 50 articles of clothing Twin size quilt will take about 70 articles of clothing

Quilt Backing: When you have gathered the articles that you would like in the quilt, lay them out and you should be able to see a prominent or favorite color that can be used for the backing of the quilt. I would suggest either fleece or flannel. Add an additional 3" onto your figure for each side to make sure that you will have enough fabric to turn over for the edging. If you will be using a separate edging you could get by with less. (Fleece comes in a 60" width, flannel 44" width)

Cutting the clothing: Most of the articles should be ironed (without stretching it) to get an accurate cut. First take a scissor and cut out as much of the flat area of the article that you want to use on the quilt. Next lay this piece of material on your cutting board and cut out a square or rectangular piece. Then sort these pieces into same sized piles. Sew these similar sized pieces into a horizontal row (as wide as your quilt will be). Next put this row on your cutting board and trim the top and bottom edge so they are straight. Iron the seams open.

Lay out of the quilt: Lay the quilt backing out on a flat surface (such as a bed) and then place the rows sewn together on top of it. This way you can visually see how long to make your rows and also see how you would like to arrange these rows. After you have decided - sew these rows together. Iron the seams open.

Quilting Your Baby Memory Blanket

Applique: Adding a name to this baby clothes quilt can be done at this time by appliqueing the letters directly on top of the clothing or appliqueing the name on a strip of material and then sewing the strip between your rows.

Squaring the quilt: After the pieces have been sewn together take a couple of measurements on the upper half and lower half of your quilt. They should be the same. Also take a couple of measurements the other direction. If they are the same you should have an evenly proportioned quilt.

Quilting your blanket: Place your quilt top on your backing trying to make sure that the seam (that you ironed open) are laying open on your backing. Place safety pins about 6 inches apart all over the quilt. Then quilt by either the tying or machine quilting method. This will keep your quilt top and quilt backing together.

Embellishments: Now is the time to add some of the special items like hats, socks and bibs. Either attach them by hand or machine stitching them on.

Edging: Decide how much of an edge you would like around the quilt. For flannel trim the backing to 2inches from the quilt edge to be folded over twice making a 1inch finished edging. For fleece trim the backing to about 1.25 inches from the quilt edge to be folded over into a 1inch finished edge. Fold the sides of your edging over first and sew it down with a straight stitch or use a decorative stitch. Next fold the top and bottom edges over making sure your corners are squared off. Then sew these edges down. Another way this could be done is to cut off your backing even with the top of your quilt edge. Using this method, you can sew on a separate edging such as satin blanket edging. These are especially nice to use on baby clothes blankets that are 40"x 40" or small as that is the amount of satin edging that comes in a package.

Quilt label: A quilt label can have important information related to why and when (date) this baby clothes quilt was made. Labels can be different shapes such as a heart, square or oval. Include a picture of the infant possibly wearing one of the outfits that are on the quilt. Choose a spot on the backside of the quilt to put your label. Hand or machine stitch it to the quilt.

History Of Baby Cribs

Baby cribs, being the child's first bed, have a most interesting history! The word "bed" initially means the place where a person sleeps - originally no more than a hollow in the ground. The first types of baby cribs were a small swinging or rocking bed known as a cradle. It has a long history and was typically one of the first pieces of furniture to be added to a new household.

Before the colonies were settled by Europeans, Native Americans cradled their babies in a multitude of different styles, almost as diverse as our modern baby cribs. There were bark cradles, skin cradles, lattice cradles, board cradles, basket cradles and many more. The style changed with the geography of the tribe and was influenced by the materials available for construction. Swaddling (wrapping the baby tightly in cloth or skins) was a favorite of many tribes since this was seen as a safety standard. Many Navajos still use a traditional board cradle that swaddles the baby to keep it safe and protected.

The earliest and most common type of cradle is the rocker, derived undoubtedly from a hollowed out half log to provide a secure resting place for baby. It was a simple step to move from the hollowed out log to a box mounted on transverse curved sections and a particular baby crib favorite with the early Colonists was characterized by sloping sides and a hooded end made from simple nailed pine boards. Examples also exist of cribs that represent "great beds of state" for royal babies. These fancy cribs were richly carved and furnished with elaborate and costly hangings. Many cradles were designed so they could rock easily, with one mechanical invention claiming that the cradle would self rock for an hour and a half! Early cribs were made to be placed right next to the parent bed, since bedrooms are actually a later addition to architecture that came with the ability to heat the home more easily. It isn't known if there were any safety standards under consideration in those early days.

Once the baby was too large for the cradle it graduated to a trundle bed. The name is derived from the utility of this bed which was made to fit easily under the parent's bed and thus conserve space. Early homes were often one or two room cottages where space was a premium.

The baby crib came into existence as homes became larger, during the 1800's, and could accommodate their size. They were usually home-made and passed on from child to child, since families were rather large in those years. Baby cribs were also passed on through generations since they were constructed of solid, durable wood found locally. If you run across such a crib today you will marvel at its sturdiness. A recent trip to an antique store while looking for a crib for my new grandson bore this out. The crib was made of hardwood that had been softened by many decades of hands-that-rocked-the-cradle and gave no indication of ever wearing out.

The basic shape and design of the crib has not changed much since the 19th century although we have an ongoing improvement in design as well as an ever increasing demand of higher safety standards . In light of these present safety standards it became obvious that the lovely antique crib I found would better display a doll or some beautiful stuffed animals, than to become my grandson's first bed. There were safety issues that included slats too far apart and a design in the headboard which could prove dangerous. We urge parents to keep a close eye out for safety, both when purchasing a new crib and to maintain an existing crib. History is fun and interesting but our priority is to keep our babies safe.

This is actually a really great way to round up all of the people the new parents love and want to share the news with. Not only is this really fun but you are also saving a fortune on the phone bill. With this option the parents can design their own cake (inside and out), but keep the gender a secret from everyone else.

The second option, and the more often used, is to keep the gender a secret from the expectant parents as well. In this version of the gender reveal, the doctor seals the ultrasound into an envelope and, without looking at it, the new parents will drop off the information at the bakery. The baker will then bake the cake with the appropriate color cake on the inside and drop it off at the party. The parents can still decorate the outside of the cake, but when they cut into the cake for the first time, they will be just as surprised as everyone else at the party!

If you get invited to one of these gender revealing parties, keep in mind that some parents use this party as something of a baby shower (i.e. you should bring a gift). Since you don't know the sex of the baby, buying something pink (or blue) could be very risky. Instead, pick a baby product that is gender neutral such as a green, black, or white diaper bag or even a neutral colored onesie set. This way your friend or family member will have everything that they need, but nothing that could, potentially, be for the 'wrong gender.' If you get invited to a gender revealing party be prepared with a gift that's appropriate for both genders, to be surprised, and to get really excited.
